Fixing Up the Exterior PDF Print E-mail

Keep the exterior walkways and stairs well swept, free of loose leaves and flyers.  Keep walks neatly cleared of snow and ice in the winter. Plant a pot or two with flowers by the front door in spring and summer.

Front Door and Entryway

The front door should gleam, since it is the entryway into the home: the first impression.  If the door needs refinishing or repainting, do so.  Remove any plaques or mailbox with your family name on it. Buy a new door mat. Make sure the lock works easily and the key fits properly.

Exterior and Roof

If the exterior needs painting, do so. Choose a color that fits well in your neighborhood without being extreme. If the roof leaks, repair or replace it. If you do not repair or replace a leaky roof, you are going to have to disclose it and the home inspector will find it.

Landscaping

Invest in landscaping. Buy a few bushes and mature colorful flowers and plant them. Trim hedges, weed flowerbeds and prune trees regularly. If you have a lawn, make sure it is evenly cut, freshly edged, well watered, and free of brown spots. Always rake up loose leaves and grass cuttings.

Back Yard

The back yard should be tidy and free of debris. If you have dogs, be sure to constantly keep the area clear of "droppings."
